Argh I just accidentally closed the window without posting, and of course the "autosaved" drafts aren't really retrievable.

Sparkly went to a ballet class today. Ey took ballet for years when ey was little, and has wanted to get back into it for a while. Ey took a couple of "drop in" classes at a place in Minnesota before we moved, but the teacher was very harsh and the format of the class wasn't actually very conducive to dropping in.

Anyway, apparently this one went very well! The exercises were mostly things ey is familiar with, and the teacher was funny and friendly.

Also it's a little more practical than the gymnastics class, because the gymnastics place is way out in the suburbs and this ballet studio is much closer to where we live.

It was a lot of fun! I have not totally lost my sight reading abilities. I learned that the Shenandoah Harmony has a Bunker Hill lookalike with a very different alto part. That threw me for a loop at first.

It may be too soon to really say this, but it seems like the popular songs here are somewhat different than they are in the Midwest. I've sung some new songs from the Denson book too, which is always nice. Also, it's really fun to stand up to lead a song I think of as an old standard, and have it be new to some of the people I'm singing with.

Today was a chore catch-up day for me. I did a bunch of laundry and some cleaning in the kitchen. Sparkly will be working with some Important People tomorrow and Wednesday, and ey was asked to dress extra nice, so I wanted to make sure ey had plenty of nice clothing clean. Ey also has to get to work earlier than usual, so I should get to bed.

Describe yourself in five sentences or less: I'm extremely new to DW but I have been roleplaying for years. This is awkward because I really don't like to talk about myself. I much prefer to immerse myself in whatever I'm writing and keep things mostly IC unless we need to plot. Bandom/celeb RP is my jam and often played Travis McCoy on Livejournal, as well as William Beckett and Justin Bieber. Check out my journal for more info.

Top 5 Fandoms:
2006 Bandom RP Era Music (if that counts as a fandom and yikes that sounds old)
Anime
Harry Potter
True Blood
Tie between Pokemon and Final Fantasy X

I mostly post about: Until I get comfortable here, I may not post about much. I am so used to only using journals IC that I often forget that I can have one for myself.

I rarely post about: Eh I'm an open book once you get to know me OOC. I just prefer to keep posts IC.

My last three posts were about: RP, reconnecting with long lost writing partners, and storylines for my Travie McCoy muse.

How often do you post?: In my personal journal? As needed. If I join a RP community, probably weekly.

How about commenting?: I love commenting and interacting, for sure.

Hello! Like many people, I'm a longtime Livejournaler who's working on making the switch over to Dreamwidth. But I've had my journal there since 2001--that's pretty much my entire adult life! Change is hard! In order to help me shift my focus over here instead of over there, I'd like to see if I can establish a more active group of DW-friends. Let me tell you a little bit about myself and my journal.

About me:
My name is Katie, I'm 38, I'm queer, and I'm female. I'm a writer and writing tutor by profession (I write fiction and book reviews; I tutor high school students and beginning creative writers). I grew up in the Hudson Valley in New York State, and currently live in Philadelphia. I live in a very old house with my girlfriend of eighteen years and our two cats. I love to read (favorite writers include E.M. Forster, Marilynne Robinson, Virginia Woolf, Pat Barker, Ursula K. Le Guin, George Saunders, etc). I also like cooking, baking, canning, and food preservation of all kinds; hiking and bird watching; gardening; swimming; watching baseball.... I'm a rather typical introvert and lead a fairly quiet life. I drink entirely too much tea.

About my journal:
I began my LJ as a reading journal, and still often post informal book reviews and thoughts on whatever I happen to be reading at the moment. In addition to writing about books, I often post about food and the projects I undertake in the kitchen. Sometimes I use my journal to track goals. Sometimes I write about the things that are going on in my life. Rarely (very rarely) I share my writing. Sometimes I post about art, or the creative process, or a quotation that caught my attention. I tend to post about once or twice a week. There are often photos. I keep my journal friends-only, but if any of this sounds interesting to you I will be happy to add you so you can check it out. No harm done if it turns out to not be your style after all!

What I'm Looking For:
Like I said, I'm transitioning from using LJ as my main online home, and am looking for a more active friends list here on DW. I like genuine connections and interesting conversations. I'd love to meet people who share my interests, especially fellow book-nerds who want to geek out about literature with me. Outdoorsy folks, creative folks, thinkers, makers, teachers, learners.... I can't promise to be the world's greatest commenter and I don't expect you to be either, but I would like to talk to each other at least occasionally.

Say hello! Let's get to know each other!

Dear Australian TV (specifically Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (see also) and The Doctor Blake Mysteries (see also)),

stop tugging my heartstrings so gosh darn hard over characters who never show up again (or die)!

Also please consider having a main character who is a little less of a perfect enlightened angel swooping in to save the poor special episode character? It's good but it's also not good and I don't know what to do with my feelings.

(I watched the latter episode with Sparkly today and was unavoidably struck by how identical it is to that episode of Miss Fisher.)

I started (re) reading Abarat today

Describe yourself in five sentences or less: I'm fairly new here, but not new to fandom. I write fanfiction and I fandom-hop without rhyme or reason. I'm currently in a lot of small fandoms, and I love to add more, so feel free to try to get me obsessed with your favorite fandom. IRL, I'm a sleep scientist who doesn't sleep enough. I talk about my girlfriend a lot.

Top 5 Fandoms:
I'm going to cheat, but in my defense, I am in so many fandoms...
Small video game fandoms (Oxenfree, Stardew Valley, and Primordia)
Boku No Hero Academia
The Goblin Emperor
Harry Potter (always... never hop away from this one)
Haikyuu!!

I mostly post about: Fanfiction, logic puzzles, fandom things. I'll probably start posting about my life at some point, but those won't be public

I rarely post about: politics, specifics about my work.

My last three posts were about: A logic puzzle and some fanfiction exchange/challenge stuff.

How often do you post?: Not much right now - I'm new here. But I imagine I'll be posting at least once every week, if not more.

How about commenting?: I'm good about commenting when I'm feeling social, but sometimes I don't have the energy. I like making friends and being friendly though, so I try.

Gosh darn it, Alexandra

I spent far too long this evening

anxiously watching some type of wasp-like insect try and fail to find its way back out through the hole in my window screen. I shut Zinfandel-cat in the bedroom to keep her from trying to eat it and she got out twice. (Bazooka sniffed around a bit, saw how big it was and then kept his distance.) But the wasplike thing eventually left.

I did some googling and I'm still not sure exactly what it was. It was clearly wasp-shaped, but it didn't seem to have any bright yellow on it, just black and brown. It was about an inch long, with a thicker body than the typical wasp, and big wings that, instead of folding up along its abdomen, stood out in a triangle shape like a fly's wings.

In other news, I got a lot of work done today. $15 ahead of my goal.

Sparkly and Cube Guy and I might go tour an apartment soon. We aren't planning to move until like September, but Sparkly found a nice place very near a metro stop and wants to find out more about it.

Another Diana Wynne Jones Thing

If I were really on top of things I'd go check out Charmed Life (And probably The Magicians of Caprona too) from the library again, and use it and Power of Three to talk about another fabulous thing that I really should have put in this post next to the bit about bullies.

Another thing DWJ does very, very well is the social dynamics of kids meeting new kids, forming opinions of each other, becoming friends or not, and how these things do or don't line up with what you'd expect to be the power dynamics and who you'd expect to be popular or socially influential. Also: the difference between bullying and dislike or competition. How kids who dislike each other deal with being forced to spend time together socially. How being a "bad kid" by the standards of adults in their life does or doesn't affect their relationships with other kids.

A thing I'm thinking about today

What exactly are palpitations? I mean exactly.

Vaguely, they're when you can feel/hear your heart beating.

But like. It's normal to be able to feel your heart berating under some circumstances, right? Yet "palpitations" is described as a symptom of diseases sometimes. Under what circumstances does it become not normal? Is it meant to be code for a racing heartbeat, when it's described as a bad thing, or is it strange to be able to feel your heartbeat even if the beat itself is behaving normally?

Asking because I can feel my heartbeat anytime I want, pretty much, if I sit still and pay attention to it, and it doesn't take much in the way of physical exertion to make it noticeable even if I'm not listening for it. I don't know if that's unusual or not.

A good day but I'm very tired

Today Sparkly and I went to "open gym" at a gymnastics place that's relatively close to where we live. (It was an hour-ish trip on metro + bus; I went along because ey wanted moral support in navigating the buses.) Ey is going to sign up for a class there, now that ey has a job. It's very nice, although different in some ways from the gym where ey used to take classes. One of the coaches there was a trampoline specialist, so I guess they focused more on that, and ey was disappointed today to find that this place only has one smallish trampoline.

I did something to my hip yesterday, I don't know how, and it was still a little stiff this morning but it calmed down after I'd walked a little bit. Can it be that what I did wrong was sit in a weird position for too long with a cat on my lap? I guess it's possible.

Subscription/Access Policy: Friend away, really! I always welcome new friends! My journal is semi-friends only. But I only lock my rare rl posts. It would be great if we have a few things in common, though. :) Oh, and you must be at least 18.

Top 5 Main Fandoms: Supernatural, Harry Potter, Star Trek AOS, Gundam Wing, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Other Fandoms: Lots. Some of them are: Almost Human, Bates Motel, Bleach, Edge of Tomorrow, Hannibal, Star Wars
Fannish Interests: I read fic, I write recs, I comment, I squee, and I fangirl. I plan to write more meta and reviews in the future. A long time ago I used to make icons.
OTPs and Ships: Oh god, please, don't force me to write them all down here. :D I'm a hopeless multishipper with countless of ships and OTP's. Let me direct you to a list. I give you the ships for the fandoms I've mentioned above. Get ready, long list ahead!

Supernatural – Sam/Dean | Sam/Castiel | Sam/Gabriel | John/Sam
Harry Potter – Harry/Draco | Snape/Harry
Star Trek AOS – Kirk/McCoy | Kirk/Spock | McCoy/Spock | Pike/Kirk | Pike/Kirk/McCoy | Spock/Kirk/McCoy
Gundam Wing – Duo/Heero | Duo/Wufei | Duo/Trowa | Duo/Zechs
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Female Dragonborn/Farkas | Male Dragonborn/Farkas | Farkas/Vilkas | Female Dragonborn/Vilkas | Male Dragonborn/Vilkas | Female Dragonborn/Brynjolf

Favourite Movies: Oh, way too many. Among them are: The Alien franchise, The Terminator franchise, Dredd (2012), The Star Trek reboot franchise, Blood Sport (1988), Sense and Sensibility (1995), The Matrix (1999), No Retreat, No Surrender (1986), Avatar (2009), Gladiator (2000), 96 Hours (2008), The Hobbit film series, American History X (1998), Signs (2002), Highlander (1986), Coming to America (1988)

TV Shows: Some I really love are: Supernatural, Bates Motel, Grimm, Almost Human, Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, American Horror Story, Orange Is the New Black, Preacher, Bosch, Smallville, Roswell, True Blood, X-Files, Farscape, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Game of Thrones, Queer as Folk (US), Hannibal

Books: "Harry Potter", "Ravished" by Amanda Quick. "Silver Lining" and "The Promise of Jenny Jones" by Maggie Osborne. I absolutely love historical romance novels so everything by Elizabeth Hoyt and Lisa Kleypas is an autobuy for me. "The Green Mile" by Stephen King. Generally most of the books by Joy Fielding and Mary Higgins Clark.

Music: I love music and I listen to almost every genre. Classical, rock, metal, ambient, alternative, music of all eras (especially 80s/90s. Those funny disco songs always crack me up lol), blues, even country, German Schlager, eurodance. I know no shame when it comes to music.

Games: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (It's my second life.), Alien: Isolation, Anno 1404 & 1503, BioShock, Dragon Age: Origins, Far Cry, Left 4 Dead etc.

Comics/Anime/Misc: Dragonball Z, Gundam Wing, Bleach, Death Note, Ranma ½, Inu Yasha,
Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Banana Fish, Bronze/Zetsuai, Angel Sanctuary, Skip Beat and a lot more.

Other Info: I was sorted into Slytherin. The hat let me decide between that and Hufflepuff, so I told him that I liked green better. :D I'm an ISFJ. I love nature and animals. Long walks in the nature make me feel all happy and content. I could watch grazing horses or cows forever. I have four cats and wish I had a dog again. I have a sweet tooth. I love bodyweight excercises. I like to laugh until I cry and my belly starts to hurt.

My journal is 90% fannish stuff. You've probably noticed that I'm a slash fan. I also have a couple of incestuous ships. Just saying in case you didn't know and react shocked. I don't hate on ships.

I'm looking for other like-minded (fannish) people with whom I can squee and, if the occasion arises, have insightful discussions with. LJ was my main residence since 2006. But with the rescent ToS fiasco I don't feel at home there anymore. So I've decided to move into my DW and make myself comfy here. All that is missing is you. So, let's be friends! :)

I love reaction gifs, so I wrap this up with one, just because.

This evening Cube Guy came over to get some mail that arrived for him, and we all went out and had pizza for dinner. It was really nice, but it used up the time I was going to spend finishing up a more substantive post (about books I'm reading.)

Sparkly's job is going well, although ey is still stuck doing online training lessons instead of actual work. Today ey met eir immediate supervisor (who works at a different location most of the time, and only comes in once a week) who seems to be a lovely person.
